Receiving — Allowing What Has Always Belonged to You
On letting success land, assuming joy before it arrives, and why receiving might be the most radical act of a high achiever.
This issue in brief: Receiving is the final stage of the Belief Loop, where we allow success, ease and abundance in without deflecting, minimising or rushing past it. For most high achievers it is the hardest stage of all. Yet it is where the loop completes, belief strengthens, and the cycle begins again at a higher level.
Receiving is the seventh and final stage of the Belief Loop.
And right now, writing this, I am sitting in it.
Not in a grand or dramatic way. More quietly than that. Absorbing the journey of sharing this work over the past months. Feeling the impact some of these ideas have had on followers who have written to say it has helped them build their own belief. Letting that land rather than rushing past it to the next thing.
The pausing, the absorbing, the actually letting it in, is receiving.
And for most high achievers, it is the hardest stage of all.
Breaking belief barriers
Watching the FIFA World Cup this last fortnight has been a timely reminder of what receiving a breakthrough actually looks like. Nation after nation stepping beyond what they previously believed was possible. Results that rewrote the story of what a team, a country, a moment could hold.
England’s last 32 match against Congo is one that will stay with me. Down 1-0 at half time, facing a statistic that felt like a verdict — in their previous nine World Cup matches when trailing at half time, England had never won. Lost seven. Drew two.
Yet Harry Kane, the England captain led the team out for the second half and scored twice. England won 2-1 and are through to the last 16.
That is what belief looks like when it breaks through a barrier that history has been building for decades. Not ignoring the odds. Choosing differently anyway.
This morning I went running with a friend, my first proper long run back after injury, clocking 22kms, building toward the Sydney Marathon, and we found ourselves talking about belief barriers in races. The moments where the body says stop and something deeper says keep going. What we have both noticed is that breaking through those barriers takes work, discipline and effort. Yet the receiving, the moment you cross the line, the moment the result arrives, requires something different. It requires you to actually let it in.
So many of us are better at the effort than the receiving. We cross the line and immediately look for the next race.
You cannot receive what you have not prepared yourself to assume
Listening to the late Wayne Dyer’s podcast in the last fortnight has felt serendipitous in the way that the right words always seem to arrive at exactly the right moment.
One line has stayed with me above all others:
You cannot receive what you have not prepared yourself to assume.
This reframes everything about how we think about success. It isn’t enough to work for something, believe in it, align with it, serve from it and build the capacity to hold it. We have to assume its presence before it arrives. We have to live as if it is already true.
This is what The Secret has always pointed toward, ask, believe, receive. Yet Wayne Dyer adds something essential. The assumption. The inner state that matches the outer reality we are calling in.
Want to become a CEO? Live that now before the title arrives. Assume a certain level of abundance? Feel it now rather than waiting for the evidence. The law of the universe, as Dyer puts it, is not transaction but reflection. Life echoes back the vibration we bring to it.
You are not here to wonder if you’re allowed to receive joy. You are here to assume joy’s presence in every unfolding.
Allowing yourself to receive what has always belonged to you.
These lines aren’t passive. They are one of the most active, courageous things a high achiever can do.
The compliment we deflect
Receiving shows up in the smallest moments too.
Someone says you look wonderful. You immediately say oh I’m exhausted actually, or this old thing. Someone praises your work. You immediately redirect to the team, minimise the effort, qualify the result.
I have noticed this particularly in female leaders, a deep discomfort with simply receiving recognition for what has been earned.
I had a small yet telling moment of this myself recently. Standing on the soccer sidelines watching Huw play, a few mums said your hair looks great. My immediate response was to laugh it off, oh I actually showered and had a blow dry yesterday. A deflection dressed as humility.
Shonda Rhimes has a beautiful three step rule for accepting a compliment from her memoir Year of Yes.
Thank you. Smile. Shut up.
She noticed that accomplished, powerful women routinely deflect praise due to deeply held feelings of not quite deserving it. Her practice is simple and radical. Say thank you. Own it. Stop talking.
A global speaker agent shared something with me recently that stayed with me. In his experience there are significantly fewer female keynote speakers than male, not because women are less qualified, but because of belief. The belief that they are ready. The belief that they deserve the stage. The belief that the world wants to hear what they have to say.
I am on a mission to help change that. Starting with this work, and having recently created a speaker profile to take the Belief Loop to more stages and more rooms. If you know of an opportunity where this thinking could add value, I would love to hear from you.
Gratitude as the gateway
Gratitude, as I wrote in Issue 4, is the foundation that opens the channel to receive.
When we are genuinely grateful, not performing gratitude but feeling it, something shifts in the body. We move from bracing to openness. From scanning for what’s missing to noticing what’s already here.
We can be grateful and ambitious. We explored that together. And the same is true of receiving. We can receive success and still want more. Receiving is not the end of ambition. It is the replenishment that makes sustainable ambition possible.
What I have discovered personally is this: as you become more able to receive, you build the capacity to allow more in. And when you are generous in your giving, you create the conditions for an abundance of receiving. The two are not opposites. They are a cycle.
Megan Dalla-Camina and the devotion question
I went to a book launch recently and left quietly moved.
Megan Dalla-Camina is one of those rare people who makes a room feel safe enough to tell the truth. Her book She Who Remembers reads like poetry for the soul.
One thing she said in the conversation has stayed with me since:
We have the data but we have forgotten the devotion. Where is the devotion in your life?
Look at your calendar. Look at the people around you. That is your answer.
Receiving requires devotion. Not to striving, but to noticing. Not to achieving, but to inhabiting. The moment we stop rushing through our own lives long enough to actually feel what we have built, that is devotion. That is receiving.
Joy is not optional
Reflecting on the Belief Loop as it completes its first full cycle, something has become clear to me that I did not fully anticipate at the beginning.
How important joy is. Fun. Enjoying the journey.
If you are not having fun, you are not doing it right, as a mentor of mine says. And I think receiving is where joy lives. It is the stage where we stop managing our lives and start inhabiting them.
This work, writing the newsletter, delivering the graduation address, building toward the book, has deepened my own belief in ways I did not expect. Receiving the journey itself, not just the destination, has been its own gift.
The loop begins again
This is where the Belief Loop completes.
Belief expands and alignment is required. Alignment steadies gratitude. Gratitude sharpens awareness. Awareness invites service. Service expands capacity. Capacity allows receiving.
And what you receive strengthens belief again.
The loop does not end here. It begins again, at a higher level of integration, with more awareness, more capacity and more trust than when you started.
So the question, as always, is the same one we began with.
What do you truly believe is possible for you now?
A practice for this fortnight
When something good happens, a kind word, a result, a moment of success, pause before moving on.
Sit in it. Breathe it in. Let it land.
Say thank you. Smile. And stop talking.
That is receiving. And it is where the loop begins again.
Thank you for being part of this first cycle of The Belief Loop. Your presence here, reading and reflecting, means more than you know. Take a moment to receive that :)

The Belief Loop continues. Issue 9 returns to Belief, yet at a higher level. Watch this space.
In summary
Receiving is where the Belief Loop completes. It is the stage where we allow success, joy and abundance in without deflecting, minimising or rushing past it. You cannot receive what you have not prepared yourself to assume. Live the reality you are calling in before the evidence arrives. Gratitude opens the channel. Joy is the signal you are on the right path. And when the loop completes, belief strengthens and it all begins again.
